A great source for animal stories is Aesop's fables. One of the advantages of the fables is that they are usually very short, which gives you a lot of room for your imagination.

Research Tip: You can find literally thousands of Aesop's fables at this website: Aesop's Books. There's also an index of specific animals that can help you zoom in on the animal you want to work with. You can also search the blog itself for a specific animal like, for example, monkey.
