Weeks 14-15

During Weeks 14 and 15, you will be choosing from EUROPEAN reading units. To get a sense of some of the stories that are coming, here's a random image from one of the units (reload to see more). Then, scroll down to learn more about all the options.

Traditional Epic:
Kalevala: Stories of the Finnish hero Väinämöinen from the epic Kalevala in English verse.

Brothers Grimm (four different units, all with different stories):
Ashliman: Rumpelstiltskin, Little Red Riding Hood, and new stories too, such as Adam and Eve!
Crane: Cinderella and Snow-White, plus the horrific Robber Bridegroom, and more.
Hunt: Snow-White and Rose-Red, Hansel and Grethel, and Hans the Hedgehog too.
Librivox: Sleeping Beauty, The Frog Prince, Rapunzel and more, all with free audio.

Fairy Tales by country:
Italian: Italian versions of Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty, etc., with distinctively Italian tales too!
Czech: Czech variations on familiar fairy tales but with many surprising twists and turns.
Russian: Russian tales of princesses, heroes, witches, warlocks, ghosts, vampires, and more.

Fairy Tale anthologies:
Jacobs: Europe's most famous fairy tales, remixed by the folklorist Joseph Jacobs.
Lang I: Puss in Boots and other fairy tales from a wide variety of European countries.
Lang II: Blue Beard and other fairy tales from a wide variety of European countries.

Literary Works:
Inferno: Dante meets many infamous sinners as Vergil leads him through the circles of Hell.
Decameron: Bawdy monks and tragic tales of love gone wrong from Boccaccio's Decameron.
Heptameron: Renaissance love and gossip as told by Margaret, the Queen of Navarre.
La Fontaine: The sly and witty verse fables of Jean de La Fontaine translated into English rhyme.
Hans Christian Andersen: Some of his short tales, plus the long story of the "Little Mermaid."
